(at least according to my experience) 

Well, if one runs a fontserver, it seems to crash pretty easily when you ask
for a huge font. And X doesnt like it if its fontserver decides to die. But
sometimes one manages to restart the fontserver, rehash the fontpaths and X
might not crash ...
