One of my useres at the gimp-werkstatt came across this problem and
asked, so I tried to open a xcf.gz on my linux-xubuntu and had the same
problem.
I can't open or export in this format.

GIMP 2.8 should open .xcf.gz files properly. Support for compressed
files was not removed, but we changed how this was implemented.
