Check out Grokking the Gimp, available through the web browser section of your Gimp toolbox. This book, available online and for free download, is an excellent piece of work and explains all of the mathematical basis for the various blending modes far better than I could do off the top of my head in this email. The details you want are in Section 5 (5.6, to be exact).
