thanks for your advice; this made it. 2 additional remarks:
1.the proposal from Manish to write into ~/.gtkrc-2.0
gtk-font-name="century 12"
works only, if it is the only line in the file.
2.a change of the font_name in the /usr/share/gimp/1.3/themes/Default/gtkrc
has no effect.
