I don't use AI. My customers do sometimes. Since Acrobat Reader 
stopped working after my latest download I don't use any Adobe 
products. Kpdf is a perfectly suitable substitute.

The AI files in question are from clients.   One was prepared by AI 
12.0. Another (different client) was 12.0.1 AFAIK. This is from 
reading the top lines of the file.
