My system is a 200 Mhz Pentium 
        128 Mb ram
        13 + 8 Gb disks
        Slow, dial-up connection.

The GUM works just fine from pdf.  I use the free Adobe Acrobat
Reader.  I heartily recommend using the pdf format.
