the images you sent is partly tranparent, so (and this is only one way)
image->mode->rgb then flatten image. this way you
can select->by color the white (or background color) part. set fuzzyness
threshold to 0 if your haveing problems. invert the selection,
and use the paint bucket. then image->mode->indexed 2 colors (or 4 to
help with antialiasing) image->alpha->add alpha channel and invert the
selection again. now edit->clear and you can save a nice, small 2 (or 4)
color gif or png.
