Because restrictions about gif format (unisys patent), you must download
separately gif plugin (gif.exe and gifload.exe). Links are in the "download
page" of the "gimp for windows" page in gimp.org

Hi people ,My name is Jason Pearce
I am new to the gimp . i downloaded version 1.1.28 Wilbur Works Gimpland for
windows 98 "Love the Gimp",but I can't get it to save to .gif even after
changing from rgb to index ,I keep getting "Save failed blah
blah.gif:Unknown file type."
Is this a bug in the Windows version ?,
Is it me ?
Any help would be appriecated.
