Questions :.gif

Hi people ,My name is Jason  Pearce I am new to the gimp . i downloaded version 1.1.28 Wilbur Works Gimpland for windows 98 "Love the Gimp",but I can't get it to save to .gif  even after changing from rgb to index ,I keep getting "Save failed blah blah.gif:Unknown file type." Is this a bug in the Windows version ?, Is it  me ? Any help would be appriecated. regards Jason Pearce....
