I'm currently using cvs but am moving to git.

One thing I find very useful with cvs are the $Id and similar macros
which I put in a string and then print out as part of the status

const char * foo_version="$Id";
printf("Using version %s\n", foo_version);

This really helps when supporting someone who might be reporting an
issue experienced with an old version of the code.

Are there similar things for git?
If not, any ideas as to how to handle the issue?
