Second: Subscribe to the git developer mailing list [1] and read all the 
recent posts about GSoC [2] - there's a lot of relevant information and 
tips there.

Once you're this far, you should have a pretty good idea of what you want 
to do. Sent an email to the Git developer list and tell them your plans, 
and ask if it sounds good.
