Operating systems make use of different line endings in text documents, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newline. Since git deals with text documents but doesn't have any opinion on newline it's not unheard of newline confusion when documents are created and checked in on one system (e.g. Windows) and later pulled over to another system (e.g. Linux).
