Review Comment:
   Yes, I would also _really_ prefer to do this without Spring but so far I 
have been unable to reproduce this behavior without Spring (outside of 
production of course).
   
   Closest thing I got to working involved "rolling restarts" of all nodes in a 
cluster with the connected clients running failover-semantics... this caused 
the issue a few times but not consistently _at all_ and the overall setup was 
to chaotic to make anything useful of it regardless.
