    The image I attached shows gedit detecting file changes and displaying a 
notification, whereas geany doesn't. 

        Can see  my description below: 
        Use  geany  open a file, then  save the file to another directory using 
a file manager, then  back to  "geany" edited and saved the  previous  opened 
file, and then  use  the file saved to the other directory overwrites the 
opened file. 
        In this case, geany doesn't detect the file changes,but gedit can do. 
However, if the opened file is overwritten by a newer file, geany does,perhaps  
 similar to the situation described by @dolik-rce.
