Yes, this is the sum of all these little space savings which reduce the 
_minimal size_ of the dialogs if you need/want

Me too at the beginning it felt strange after beeing used since long with the 
previous full sentences !
In this design It's more of a short reminder of the option, which when used 
often you don't question anymore...but still beeing answered with just hovering 
it with its full description poping

As stated above, this design _makes possible_ to reduce the minimal size of the 
dialogs.
If you need/prefer to expand it, like it was before for example, geany will 
still save its size when closing it, thus you won't have to expand it again 
when re-opening it..

This is strange, I might have borked the patch converting it from my debian 
version ?
Do you have other mnemonics working ?
like typing `Alt`+ `f` triggerring the File menu, and then typing `n` opening a 
new file ?
Also geany mnemonics of the dialogs are effective only if the intended dialog 
has focus
(thus re-typing `Ctrl` + `f` for find dialog or `h` for find+replace to re-gain 
their focus)
