Thanks for the info. If I was going to resurrect whatever coding "skills" I had (or not) I'd probably work in C. For all its alleged difficulty, C was ultimately easier for me to follow than OO-ish languages, certainly including Python. I always enjoyed "seeing the gear wheels turn" in C, including memory, etc. Those details were obscured by languages like Python. It kinda took some of the fun out of it for me (as a hobbyist at least). I ended up butting heads with almost every OO language I tried.
Now it's probably most efficient for me to just get over it and move on.
