Review Comment:
   If I didn't use the index in the error message, yes it could work. But in 
the case of lists `imap` is a function over `(name, item)` or `(index, item)` 
depending on whether names is null. So I don't think I can simplify it with 
`imap`. (I originally wrote with imap and then found I had to change strategy.)
