Review Comment:
   It's kept around for:
   1. checking that an input batch has the expected types (if these are 
different, I don't think the grouper can be expected to be well-behaved)
   2. recreating the grouper in `AnyKeysGroupingSegmenter` (at least as long as 
the grouper doesn't support resetting)
