I agree with all of these points, although I am admittedly coming from the CPU world. I think with the initial restrictions that cross-device copies should not be made when calling a device protocol method we get the benefit of interoperability for most use cases while maintaining backward compatibility should there be a need for the consumer to negotiate the producer to perform a copy.
