This is a continuation of the work done in #9447 to improve runtime performance around sparse and/or highly uniform columns. As such this may be of interest to @alamb and @etseidl. 5a1d3d761a203ec445ee67324a15138f924ab5a0 adds three benchmarks that exercise the code path this series optimizes.
