After looking at this further, there is a significant downside here: basically the approach in this PR is to trade some additional work (packing the per-byte validity flag into a `u64` and so on), in exchange for removing a blocker to being able to vectorize the loop. So *if* we can vectorize the loop with that blocker removed, it's a significant win. But for closures that prevent vectorization, we end up doing that additional work for nothing.
