When I test with my changes I get 27989.48 req/s. This is effectively the same. The variation of results from run to run for this test means it has at best 2 to 3 significant figures of accuracy. My test platform is not the best. Only 4 cores, and docker has been seen to have issues with thread starvation for mysterious reasons. But the results don't indicate this is a performance fix. Just a dekruft PR.
