I am keen to find out about anyone else who is running a successful job placement scheme for deprived students - preferably IT based, but we could also learn from others who are running schemes that are working well in other vocational training areas.
I am trying to help our NGO partners (Oasis India) in Bombay identify what are the key elements of a successful job placement scheme. Oasis have established an adult learning centre (which we call eAcademy) in one of the Bombay townships. They have been teaching IT basics (like Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint etc) but now want to move to a more vocational placement basis. The profile of their students are: - 16-25 year old Bombay residents, many from deprived backgrounds - probably with English as a second, or minimal language - some of whom will not have completed their school leaving certificates - competing in a job market which is tight and puts a premium on school certificates, reasonable English Be hugely grateful for any contributions or advice.
