Luxembourg Pledges 1.2 Million Euros to Support Development Gateway's Online Initiatives for Developing Countries
Washington, DC, July 20, 2005 - The Government of Luxembourg, a founding donor of the Development Gateway Foundation, has pledged to extend and increase its financial support for the organization with a total of 1.2 million euros over the next three years. The funds will advance the Development Gateway's non-profit mission of putting the Internet to work for the benefit of developing countries. "The Development Gateway is a valuable partner in using innovative technologies to increase development impact," said Jean Guill, Director of the Treasury at the Luxembourg Ministry of Finance. "We are particularly eager to expand its work in Africa, where the foundation's growing commitment is helping the development community address the world's most critical challenges." In Africa and around the world, the Development Gateway supports locally driven initiatives in over 60 nations, including Country Gateway web portals dedicated to national development. The foundation also operates a global web portal of development information and related services. Partners and clients in government, international agencies, the private sector, and nonprofits use these gateways to facilitate their exchange of development information, increase transparency in public procurement, and build enterprise. The Development Gateway's diverse group of donors includes the World Bank as its founder, governments from around the world, multinational corporations, and others. In April, Pakistan joined this group with a $1 million commitment, and in March the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation became a donor, with a grant of $235,000. "As we join with partners across the development community to work more effectively and improve people's lives, I want to thank Luxembourg for its ongoing commitment to these goals," said Alan J. Rossi, Chief Executive Officer of the Development Gateway. About the Development Gateway Foundation The Development Gateway Foundation is an enabler of development. We help improve people's lives in developing countries by building partnerships and information systems that provide access to knowledge for development.
