I did this and more! I enjoyed the elegant abstraction of the palette layout
so much that I couldn't stop myself from changing the 'widgettype' (martijn)
palette layout until I had something really comfortable.

Is there any way that the palette layout could be abstracted even more so
that it is possible to specify one of several, possibly contributed, layouts
at run time? I don't know C so I don't know how easy this would be and
perhaps you don't want to offer users a choice of palette layouts anyway.
BTW, thanks for your informative reply about Gtk/Gnome buttons etc, I had
not realised how the Gnome versions were implemented and was only looking
at how they are constructed. If saving/loading them as different widget
classes would cause Glade trouble please ignore my comments.
