It seems that already we have a 'legacy'. I agree with Martijn that
his DTD although not perfect is a substantial improvement and would
like to (help) change Glade to start using a DTD and a more
appropriate XML format. Sure, this will break all current applications
that build upon the existing format, but there are longer term
advantages. Other products have also seen major changes and have
managed to work these out.
The key is probably how and when to migrate. As for when, I think that
short term (next few months) we would want to maintain the 0.5 series
but in parallel, go for 0.9 or 1.0 with an updated file format (as a
new version will probably be broken for a while). At least Gnome would
continue to have a stable GUI tool while work is being done on a new
format which is easier to maintain in the long term. As for how, I
think that if we have the new format, we can probably modify the
current loading/parsing routines to build the new XML-tree instead, so
that a save would write out in the new format. I don't have clear
ideas about how to solve the issues of the apps that depend on the
current format, but if the new format was defined, there would be a
similar period for these to be updated.
just my EUR 0.05,
Erlend.
