I could successfully boot strap ghc-4.04 under Solaris 2.7 from the source,
ghc-4.04-src.tar.gz, and hc files, ghc-4.04-x86-hc.tar.gz.
I just followed the steps described in the web page,
"http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/4.04/installation_guide/installing-8.html".

The only exception was that, in attempting to recompile the libraries,
"gmake boot" was not complete, due to the lack of happy-1.6.
Altough there must be a better way, I avoided the problem simply by:

        1. copy "lib/imports" from a SPARC machine;
        2. compile happy-1.6 without -O option. (see HappyHcOpts in
           "mk/config.mk");
        3. install happy-1.6; and
        4. "gmake boot" followed by "gmake all" in "ghc/lib".

Hope this helps.
