We don't have direct access to any HPs here at Glasgow right now,
but I recall running into this way back with 2.02. Upping the gcc
optimisation level for the modules where these long calls were
generated `cured' it, i.e., -02-for-C . If that doesn't work, try
-Onot -O2-for-C on the offending modules.
The ghc driver supports -mlong-calls for this, but that's just for
gcc-2.6.x. AFAIK, there's no parallel to it in gcc-2.7.x
