Curiously I am fixing a typechecker bug that leads to exponential
behaviour due to type synonym expansion, at this very moment. Can you try
with `-XPartiallyAppliedClosedTypeSynonyms`, and see if that changes
anything?
Also with `-dshow-passes`.
