I think I'm slightly ahead with my vision insurance, and it seems like
I'm getting more than a "modest group discount.". The premiums
(through work) run me about $78 a year. The plan pays for one eye
exam per year -- totally covered, except for a visual field test if I
want it -- and one pair of glasses with any frame up to about $125.
(And, yes, I realize there's a huge markup on frames.) I did pay $40
extra to get thinner lenses on my bifocals, but for $118 (insurance
premiums plus the $40) I got one eye exam worth about $65 (the going
rate in my area) plus one pair of very strong prescription bifocals in
a nice frame. (Way nicer than the Zenni plastic frames, and Zenni
won't make bifocals in my prescription.) I might have been able to
bargain, shop around, or try to find discounts that would come out the
same, but this is easier.
