I think you will find (like me) that as you get older and your arms aren't long enough to hold the paper at a distance where you can actually read it anymore, that progressive or bi-focals are the only answer. You have to face the fact that your just not going to be able to wear the spiffy cool looking frames that you did in your youth. Larger frames with taller lenses will provide a much more comfortable viewing experience and give you the larger reading area that you are looking for. You can still get some nice frames in the bigger sizes, but I'm afraid if you still like the small slim lenses, then you will find that the reading area gets cut off to do so. Zenni allows progressives with a lens height of 32mm and some of the other sites offer better quality progressive lenses for lens height of 28-30mm but at a $$ premium. When I wore single vision lenses I always purchased glasses with lenses that were 24-26mm high (and 49mm wide) . Now with my progressives I find that I'm more comfortable if I purchase lenses in the 34-36mm height. To sort of hide the height of the lenses I try to find lenses that are in the 54-56mm width range which gives the same kind of H to W ratio as my old single vision lenses. Put these in a nice light looking frame (titanium or stainless steel are usually pretty minimalistic) in a light modern colour (preferably not brown or gold) and you get a very wearable pair of progressives that don't look like "old guy glasses"
