In another thread last year Liz said:

"Transitions (a photochromatic brand) are billed as being totally
clear when not activated, but you can see the tiniest tint when
comparing to regular lenses."

True... but I'm wondering what's up with my new ones. I took a photo
of my glasses. It's at http://www.evertype.com/taisce/glasses.jpg

In that photo, from top to bottom, you see:

1. Reading glasses. No tint, no transitions coating. Not totally
clear. From Goggles4U. In use on the bedstand.

2. Reading glasses. No tint, no transitions coating. Not totally
clear. From an optician in Oregon. In use at the desk.

3. Distance glasses. Transitions coating, a little darker than the
reading glasses above.  From an optician in Oregon. No longer in use;
right lens was not cut properly to my prescription.

4. Distance glasses. Transitions coating, a little darker than the
reading glasses above. Same as Number 3 actually. From Frames Direct.
Nice expensive frames that my friends don't like—the liked Number 6
below, which is why I got Number 5.

5. Varifocal glasses. Transitions coating, quite a bit darker than the
reading glasses above. From EyeBuyDirect.

6. Bifocal glasses. No tint, no transitions coating. Totally clear!
>From EyeBuyDirect. Myfriends all liked these, and I was trying
bifocals but hated the hard line (at least with the 40% bifocals.
Maybe the 30% would be better but I went for the varifocals which I
like pretty well.

The thing I don't understand is why Number 5 is so dark when
"unactivated". I'm tempted to keep these as a pair that I just use
when I expect to be going outside a lot. Indoors at my desk I've even
taken to putting the clear ones on from time to time just because the
computer screen is brighter.

Is the tint on number 5 an accidental tint? Or is it normal... and if
so why don't Numbers 3 and 4 look the same?
