Photochromic lenses change in direct proportion to the UV present.
Since car windshields contain a UV blocker, they respond considerably
less, when inside the car.
There is another variety called Drivewear, which consists of several
coatings, one of which reacts to light, rather than UV...but I've not
seen them in person. There have been limited discussions about these
lenses, on the forum, but what little information there is, should be
in the archives.
If it was me, I'd get photochromics put into a frame that has a
magnetic clip on. That way you get the best of both worlds.
