My prescription is not as strong as yours, -5.50 and ADD of 1.75, so
this may not work as well for you as it does for me, but, like Paul, I
also have multiple pairs of single vision glasses. I have one pair of
progressive bifocals that I don't like wearing, but work for a few
situations (like a classroom).

My everyday pair, that I can wear for about 80% of what I do, is a
"monovision" pair that has slightly weak distance correction in the
left eye and medium (like for PC monitor) correction in the right
eye. I use them for daylight driving, work (lots of time looking at a
PC monitor), casual reading (maybe pulled down a smidge on my nose),
watching TV, going to movies. I don't mind the slight under-correction
for distance and, in fact, it feels less stressful on my eyes than my
full prescription. [I've been wearing under corrected lenses for at
least 10 years now and my distance vision stopped deteriorating and
has, in fact, improved a bit in the last 10 years, but that's another
discussion.] I do wear my full strength distance prescription pair
when driving at night.

I was introduced to the monovision concept by a great optomotrist who
prescribed them for my contact lenses. (I don't wear contact lnses
anymore). Apparently, most people prefer having the stronger
correction on their dominent eye, but I actully much prefer the weaker
lens on my right (dominant) eye. (Easy to try both ways with
contacts)

For concentrated reading and closeup work I have several pairs of
closeup glasses. I have been experimenting with different degrees of
correction and it looks like I'll end up with one reading pair and an
even weaker pair for closeup crafts/electronic assembly/hobby work.
These aren't monovison, both eyes are corrected for the same
distance.
