Thanks everyone so much for the wealth of info! Chalo, you mentioned that the width of one lens plus the center width should equal the interpupillary distance (PD). I assume that by "center width" you mean half of the bridge width? If so, the lens width of the frame I've (mostly) decided upon at Zenni is 50mm + the bridge 18mm / 2 = 59mm. My PD is 59.5 distance & 54.5 near, so this lens does sound like a slightly better fit than my current lens, which is 53mm.
For whatever it's worth, I think I just have a little larger face overall than some. My current frames are 142mm total width and fit very well. So, my PD of 59mm may be just a smidge narrow for my face size proportionately. My pupils don't land (horizontally) in the middle of the lens of my current glasses, but as you suspected, instead fall just a bit inboard of that. So that may be what contributes to the extra edge thickness on that left lens. I'm betting that, like your sister, the brick & mortar shop charged me for a grade of lens that I didn't get. Using the calculator you linked to (Thanks, Chuck!!) on the lens shape that I've selected my findings are in line with yours, Eric - that the stronger left lens should be just about 4mm thick at the outer edge. Given that my current lens is a hair less than 6mm on that outer edge, I think I can live with that. Again, I really appreciate the info, guys!
