I don't wear bifocals but single vision lenses, I'm a +5.00 in both eyes. I find 1.67 to be a minimum index. My last two pairs were 1.74 and I've been very happy with them (both from Coastal Contacts). My nose becomes very irritated using nose pads, so I recommend you getting a good plastic frame if you might have a sensitive nose.
