I had the same thing happen when I bought some software from a
company in Europe. Apparently a charge from some part of the
world remote to you is a trigger for somebody to check things out.
I had the reverse problem when I worked overseas. My American
credit card would sit idle in my pocket for months at a time, and
then I would fly to the US and be charging things all day long.
It was usually super-embarrasing, because it would always happen
at a cash register with peole behind me. "Excuse me sir, our
screen is asking us to verify your identity..." I finally got
the proper response down, and would have my passport and airline
tickets ready to present with a flourish, anexplanation, and
a quick apology for everyone behind me at the register.
