I've used framesdirect.com twice for a particular frame and style unavailable elsewhere. Both times, the finished product was excellent, perfect on my somewhat unusual prescription, with excellent workmanship on the edges of the lenses. That said, they took a month to deliver, and their prices are high (but still less than local retail). Customer service on the phone was friendly and responsive. They call your eye doctor to verify your prescription, so a slightly out-of-date RX will not be accepted there.
An alternative in this category is coolframes.com in New York. They offer a good selection of designer frames, though not as extensive as framesdirect. Prices on frames vary, usually competitive with framesdirect, sometimes substantially less. Prices for lenses in my prescription were a lot less than framesdirect, and the quality for me has been excellent. Turnaround time was about 10 days. All in all, it's a great alternative to boutique optical stores.
