Sorry, I remembered wrong. Which is good, because tried showed it didn't work.
Straced it reveled that /etc/ssl had the wrong permissions (750 instead of 755)
and it now works! Awesome.
No idea how that would have happened, certainly not something I would have
consciously changed.
