Nice work, congratulate your son as a budding scientist. I may have add something like this to my website once I am sure I understand it. As with Cobbly, I would think that it is that the increased greenhouse effect slows down cooling so that winter (and nighttime) temperatures don't fall as far as they might otherwise. It seems unlikely to me that band overlaps would have much to do with this particular effect.
