Hello Jim Torson, re that Observer article:

Check out this plot of seasonal temperatures in the Antarctic. http://
www.antarctica.ac.uk/About_Antarctica/Weather/Temperature/index.php

I don't know enough about the slope gradients involved to be sure. But
I presume that even peripheral (coastal) glacial acceleration couldn't
substantially affect the interior ice mass though glacial flow rate
changes. And when you look at the temperatures involved at the Pole
and Vostok you'd need a hell of a lot of warming to cause actual melt.
-40 + 0.7 = -37.3, a bit more sublimation but no melt.

I get REALLY REALLY annoyed at this sort of press. The Arctic has
ocean beneath it, Antarctica (on the whole) does not. Combining the
issue of N. Polar melt with S. Polar makes no sense at all!

William Connelly:
>The newspaper report, like most such, is cr*p. They should wait for the bl**dy
>thing to be published instead of trying to produce silly stories like this that
>have no value at all.

Actaully it does has a value, in a market you give your readers what
they want to read. Just wait, there'll be a Horizon programme about
this 'bitter dispute in the scientific community" later this year. ;o)

PS I had thought that AR4 Scientific Basis was going to be published
on Friday, then I went back and actually read the press release and
it's just the SPM. Doh!

"The full WGI Report, including 11 chapters and a Technical Summary,
will be published by Cambridge University Press and should be
available by mid-2007 in book form and online from IPCC web sites."
