I don't know.  I wonder if anyone has tried to predict these senarios.

The increase from $2 to $3 per gallon seems to have been absorbed by
consumers cutting back on non-gas purchases.  The interest in
vanpooling on my 25-mile commute as gone up about 250% thats only from
about 16 riders to 40ish.  I know a few hold outs that are probably
dropping $6 per work-day to keep driving alone to work.
