Subject: [Global Change: 1899] can organic farming suffice?

*begin quote*
I have been under the impression that the world's current population
cannot be fed without the use of chemical fertilizers.
<...>
Nevertheless Dr Ivette Perfecto of U Michigan is quoted in the press as
stating otherwise, based on a modeling study.

Perfecto! Especially if the growing season is extended at high latitudes!

(PS, must be mindful of the delicate balance between organic fertilizer
emissions and associated methane release on the one hand, and the release of
methane sequestered in permafrost should high-latitude growing seasons be
extended a bit too far, on the other. In case you haven't noticed, this is
a long winded fart joke.)
