I'm somewhat curious about the relationship between sunspots and TSI.
Browsing the Lockwood paper, its clear that there is a strong
correlation between sunspot counts and TSI, and I imagine sunspot
counts are used as proxies for TSI reconstructions like Lean et al.

In an era where we have direct satellite measurements of TSI, however,
what is the point of the incessant comparison between temperature and
sunspot counts in some quarters? Shouldn't they be using TSI data? I
realize that there are are still some issues with reconciling PMOD and
ACRIM datasets, but I imagine it can't be that big a barrier.

Sunspots can probably be a useful tool in predicting the evolution of
solar cycles (e.g. sunspot counts could provide better information
than TSI measurements regarding the beginning of a new solar cycle).
Still, I'm puzzled why we see so many graphs of sunspot counts and so
few of TSI in climate change discussions.
