My take is that we need to avoid the harmful effects of CO2 emission,
and if it is possible to use coal in such a way as to avoid those
harmful effects, then there is no reason to ban coal.
Gasification with CCS is a proven technique for CO2 emission
reduction. Whether or not it is adopted by industry depends on having
CO2 emission-limiting laws on the books.
I think we should focus political will on getting CO2 limits enacted
into law, rather than banning technology.
