Lucknow: In an attempt to further consolidate Dalit and tribal votebank, chief minister Mayawati on Thursday announced a quota for SCs/STs in all government/semi-government work contracts up to Rs 5 lakh. After a cabinet meeting, Mayawati told reporters that henceforth 21% work contracts would be reserved for SCs and 2% for STs. They would be eligible to apply for all tenders floated by any government /semi-government/public undertaking/development authority and any other establishment under the state government. Currently, SCs and STs get 21% and 2% reservation in government jobs. She said a law would be enacted for this purpose, which would make itcumpulsory for all departmental heads to announce reservation for SCs and STs while floating tenders. ‘‘Anyone found flouting the government order would be punished severely,’’ she said. To give impetus to her Dalit agenda, Mayawati said a roadmap had been prepared to give a facelift to Ambedkar villages. However, no new villages would be added under the Ambedkar scheme as she was not happy with the quality of work done in these villages. She said emphasis would be given on Dalit localities while constructing roads and taking up developmental activities. Mayawati said the cabinet also approved abolition of check posts set up to prevent evasion of Value-Added Tax. She also said traders would now be able to file the Form 38 online.
