A first: Shimla schools shut due to heat

Shimla: For the first time ever, schools in the summer capital of Shimla
have been ordered shut due to the unprecedented spiral of heat, bringing
home the horrors of a changing climate. With mercury crossing the 30°Celsius
mark, five above normal, the state government has reacted to let children up
to Class VIII in Shimla remain indoors till June 30.
‘‘We have been receiving reports from some schools in lower districts of
the state that children are experiencing a tough time, especially during
power-cuts. Keeping the interest of kids in mind, a decision has been taken
that schools will remain closed up to class VIII till June 30,’’ said education
minister I D Dhiman, adding, it hasn’t been extended to senior students,
though, as they are better equipped to beat the heat.
A notification has been issued stating that all schools, except those in
the district of Lahaul and Spiti, would remain closed from June 26 to June
30. Managements of private institutes have also been advised to suspend
classes up to middle school. Initially it was decided to close schools after
recess (noon) but intense heat waves changed it all, said Dhiman, who was
open to further alteration in timings.
