NEW DELHI - Subdued showers during the first week of August have widened
India's rainfall deficit in the ongoing southwest monsoon season to 29%
below
normal from 25% earlier, India Meteorological Department officials said
today.
India has received total rains of 401 mm, as against normal 564.7 mm
since
the start of the four-month monsoon season on Jun 1 till Aug 12, officials
said.
"In the week ended Aug 12, rains across the country were 56% below
normal
at just 27.4 mm," an IMD official said.
In the week ended Aug 5, rains were 64% below normal.
In the monsoon season till Aug 12, rains were reported deficient or
scanty
in 27 of 36 meteorological subdivisions in the country and in the week to
Aug
12 rains were deficient in 31 of 36 subdivisions.
In its outlook for the next five days, Met said it expects rains over
many
places in the paddy, maize growing north west India and oilseed, paddy
growing
central India in the next 24 hours.
Widespread rainfall activity over the plains of northwest, east and
south
peninsular India are also predicted to occur in the next 48 hours.
More than 60% of India's arable land does not have any irrigation
facilities, and is largely dependent on monsoon rains to water crops.
Met will officially detail weekly and season's rain data later today.
