This info applies to Alon Aircoupes. I don't know if the same issue
exists
on other models of the Ercoupe/Aircoupe.

At the front side of the main spar center section, right where the center
section meets the fuselage skin, there is a piece of foam rubber (sponge
material) glued directly onto the front side of the center section spar
web.
The foam is glued in place with contact cement. The spar web is bare
aluminum in this location. There is no paint or primer between the foam
and
the aluminum. I believe the purpose of the foam is to prevent air from
leaking in between the fuselage/wing junction. When this foam gets wet,
it
holds the moisture in contact with the spar web.

Upon removal of this piece of foam, and scraping off the contact cement, I

found some light surface corrosion starting to form on the spar web. In
order to inspect this area it is necessary to remove the foam piece. I
suggest that this piece of foam be removed, the area thoroughly cleaned,
and
coated with epoxy primer before the foam is glued back in place. This is
a
location that may have never been inspected on some Alons, since it is
hard
to get at, and the foam must be removed in order to see the problem. The
guy
who told me about this problem said that he saw an Alon with the spar web
badly corroded in this location.

If anyone is interested in a photo of this area, let me know and I will
e-mail one to you.

Good Flying,

Wayne DelRossi
