Alan, My coupe was painted with a two part paint that was bought at Boeing's salvage yard in Seattle. I have tried basically every paint stripper sold and most would only soften the surface, none would work very well. Lynn down in Frostproof turned me on to a product manufactured by Napier International Technologies out of Langley, B.C. Canada. The stuff he recommended was called RemovAll (for automotive industry) made by Napier. I was not able to find it locally (I'm in the Boontoolies) but called Napier and found out they make the same product for home use under the name HYDROSTRIP 502. It was carried by both Dulux paint stores and Sherwin Williams. I sprayed it on with a HVLP gravity gun. No protection other than eye protection because of the spray gun. I started at the tail end and sprayed forward to Frame 'F' went around the other side and did the same thing. When I finished the second side the paint on the first side was falling off in sheets the size of your hand. I washed it all off with a pressure washer, right down to BARE metal. Stripped the entire fuselage in about 3 hours including clean up. Used 1-1/2 gallons at $27.00/gallon. The product uses Hydrogen Peroxide as the active ingredient. It is blended with a carrier that prevents it from breaking down as it normally does, the reason that Hydrogen Peroxide powered submarines and torpedoes were so dangerous. As it goes through the pores of the paint and comes into contact with the Aluminum the carrier reacts as a catalyst and allows the Hydrogen Peroxide to break down and create a gas that breaks the boundary between the paint and the metal. Nothing is damaged and it is really environmentally safe. Can be shipped without Hazard warnings etc. I must admit that I did have one aileron that needed several applications of stripper.. For some unknown reason, the aileron had Seven coats of paint on it which included three coats of Zinc Chromate between layers, one of which was day glo orange. We have stripped two Cessna 172's at the local airport with it with the same results. I assure you that a pressure washer is a must. If you need info about the product, Napier has a web page with all of the particulars and will let you find a dealer near you.
